A Silent Nation

Many single parents live in poverty in low socio-economic communities. Numerous single parents have problems related to malnutrition, child hyperactivity, teen pregnancy, drug abuse, crime, and class detainment with high dropout rates. With few resources, single parents are left to silently address these overwhelming life circumstances alone.

Pastor Shelia, affectionately named by those who know her, started FRH with a small number of single parents with at-risk children suffering from many of these issues. She began this work with them and for ten years offered holistic programs in the south side of Tallahassee Florida.

Many of the parent-participants went on to live successful lives, working or completing secondary educational goals. To further service innovations, Pastor Shelia continued her educational pursuits by obtaining her AA from Tallahassee Community College and a BS degree from the House of the Lord's Theological Seminary.

The Hard Truth

A large population of Tallahassee residents live below the poverty line and in areas designated as food deserts.

Many do not have enough basic needs such as healthy food choices and adequate clothing.

There is a higher rate of childhood and adult obesity, diabetes, and other conditions related to poor nutrition.

Pastor Shelia is now CEO of the FRH Mission, and Praise and Worship Center. She works in cooperation with her husband, Reverend Dr. Michael Askew. FRH along with volunteers, partner agencies, organizations, and churches continue to carry out a mission of service to single parents and at-risk families. She has greatly impacted those around her and is well-respected within the community. To those who work with her, she fully embodies the expression, “Let the life I live speak for me”

(I Timothy 4:12).
